Italian prosecutor Giovanni Kessler holds a guest lecture at ACREC

On March 20, 2019, a public lecture by a well-known Italian lawyer and prosecutor, fighter against the Italian mafia, former head of the European Anti-Fraud Office and a member of the Supervisory Board of the Anti-Corruption Action Center Giovanni Kessler, was held at the Anti-Corruption Research and Educational Centre.

The event was organized within the framework of the ACREC Communication Platform at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

During the lecture, Mr Kessler spoke about European practices in the fight against corruption. In this context, he shared his thoughts on whether effective prevention of corruption could be achieved without effective prosecution mechanisms, and why it is important to invest in the sustainability of anticorruption infrastructure.

Giovanni Kessler also drew attention to the need for a holistic and comprehensive approach to combating corruption. According to the prosecutor, such an approach should consist of three key components: prevention, detection and punishment (sanctions). As Mr Kessler himself said: “Each of these elements is important, they are interconnected and cannot exist without one another.”

In the context of Ukraine, Giovanni Kessler also emphasized that the roots of corruption are often hidden within society itself. That is why changing people’s mentality and investing in education of the younger generation is extremely important. As a result, society should come to the realization that corruption is not profitable, and is detrimental to both the private and public good.

As usual, the lecture ended with an engaging discussion, during which the audience debated the issue of building zero tolerance to corruption, cultural aspects of the fight against corruption, the creation of an anti-corruption court in Ukraine etc.

ACREC Communication Platform is an independent platform for communication and exchange of ideas among activists, experts, academics and practitioners in the field of anti-corruption in Ukraine and abroad. The role of the Anti-Corruption Research and Educational Centre within the framework of the Platform is to initiate public discussions and mediate the process of interaction between various agents in the field of combating corruption in Ukraine.
